# Chats

## Start a chat

Open the home page (**New chat**), type what you need and press **Enter**. Use **Shift+Enter** for a new line.

Before you send, choose who can see the chat with the picker under the message box:

- **Personal**: only you
- **Shared**: everyone in the workspace can read it and post in it. See [Shared chats](#shared-chats)

Not sure where to start? Click one of the example prompts on the home page, or browse [Discover](/discover). Both fill in the message box without sending, so you can adjust the prompt first.

Your unsent message is kept if you navigate away and come back.

## Add files

Click **+** → **Add photos & files**, drag files onto the chat, or paste them.

- Images, PDFs, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CSV and text files
- Up to 4 files per message, 20 MB each
- Uploaded files count towards a 200 MB storage limit per person and are deleted after 30 days

To turn a CSV file into a sheet you can work with, open a chat and choose **+** → **Import CSV as sheet**.

## Dictate

Click the microphone to speak your message instead of typing. Click ✓ to keep the text or × to discard it. Recordings are transcribed and not stored, and dictation doesn't use credits.

## Skills and deep research

The **+** menu has two ways to steer how SourceGeek works on your next message:

- **Skills**: recruiting playbooks such as Candidate Dossier, Interview Kit, Outreach Writing, Talent Mapping or Market Compensation Research. Pick one and SourceGeek follows that playbook
- **Deep research**: SourceGeek plans the research, runs several researchers over recruiting data and the web, checks every citation and delivers a cited report. It takes several minutes and uses more credits. See [What SourceGeek can do](/capabilities#research-the-web)

The menu also has your [prompt templates](/templates) and [project templates](/project-templates).

## While SourceGeek works

SourceGeek shows its steps as it goes: what it searched, what it read and what it made. Click the steps to see the details of each one.

- **Stop**: when the message box is empty, the send button becomes **Stop**
- **Keep talking**: a message you send while SourceGeek is working is picked up straight away
- **Questions and approvals**: SourceGeek may ask you a question or ask before it does something in another tool, such as sending an email. See [Questions and approvals](/approvals)

What SourceGeek produces, such as sheets of candidates, documents and shortlists, opens beside the chat. See [Sheets, documents and pages](/artifacts).

## Responses

Under each message you can **Copy** the text. Under SourceGeek's final answer you can rate it with thumbs up or down and tell us what went wrong, which helps us improve SourceGeek.

When SourceGeek remembers something you told it, a "Remembered" line appears under its answer with **Undo**. See [Memory](/memory).

## Organize your chats

Your chats are listed under **Recent chats** in the sidebar, with pinned chats first. A dot next to a chat tells you SourceGeek is working on it, is waiting for you, or finished since you last looked.

From a chat's **…** menu in the sidebar you can:

- **Rename** it
- **Pin** it to the top
- **Archive chat**: hide it without deleting it. To find it again, use the filter next to **Recent chats** and pick **Archived**
- **Delete chat**: you have 5 seconds to undo

The **Chats** page lists every chat you can see, with filters for active and archived chats and for personal and shared ones. Chat options (ⓘ) at the top of a chat let you rename, archive or delete it too.

An archived chat is read-only until you unarchive it.

## Search

Click the magnifier above your chat list to search titles and everything said in your chats, archived ones included.

## Shared chats

In a shared chat everyone in the workspace can read and post. You see who's there and who's typing, and each message shows its author. Every member's message gets an answer from SourceGeek and uses the workspace's credits.

- Only the person who started the chat can switch it between personal and shared, and it can't become personal again once others have posted
- Any member can rename, archive or delete a shared chat
- A question or approval can only be answered by the person whose message led to it
- SourceGeek uses each person's own [connectors](/connectors), never someone else's

To invite people into a chat, click **Share**. See [Sharing](/sharing).

## Credits

Every answer from SourceGeek uses 1 credit, plus the credits of what it does along the way, such as searches. See [Credits and usage](/workspace/usage).

## Chat retention

A workspace admin can have inactive chats deleted automatically after a set time. See [Workspaces](/workspace#chat-retention).
